Marx Cafe (Mt. Pleasant)

Marx Cafe (Mt. Pleasant)
3203 Mt. Pleasant St., NW

(1-5 Eggs)

General: (2.5)

Live in the mountains is simple. That’s what Marx Cafe brought to mind. We ventured out to the end of the Mt. Pleasant corridor to check out what this awesome neighborhood had to offer and decided on Marx Cafe. The food tasted home cooked. Everything about the restaurant had a definite DIY feel . The DIY-homegrown vibe was good for some things but not others. Brunch was reasonably priced from about $6-$10 with well-sized servings.

Ambiance: (2.5)

Its ambiance was one of the reasons I started out with a reference to the mountains. The dinning room was seeming constructed from ply-like wood. It was dimly light in some places and had very simple furniture. I wasn’t the cleanest but we didn’t see any roaches or anything of the sort to cause alarm. It wasn’t very crowded, and had the expected pics of Che and other socialist/communist heroes sitting on the walls.

Coffee: (1.5)

The coffee wan’t good. The mugs we received the coffee in weren’t exactly the cleanest either. It wasn’t weak or anything, just not of good quality (on par with folgers so you get an idea). At one point we were trying to figure out whether we’d been served instant coffee, but I think it was brewed.

Service: (2.5)

There was one server/bar-tender taking care of the place. He came once in a while and didn’t mess up any of our orders. He did, however, manage to submerge his flannel sleeve into the water cups as he served coffee. One interesting thing we noted is that he carried a pen in a knife sheath. His laid back appearance set the tone for the meal. The food came in good time.

Food: (2.5)

Like mentioned the food had a homemade tasted. The hash browns slightly greasy. Most things were tasty but not very accurate to their menu description in terms of sides, etc. Also like mentioned above, the silverware, dishes, cups, and glass’s cleanliness was questionable. If you didn’t mind the potential of not such a thorough cleaning, the food was ok. Their omelettes were tasty as were their smoked-salmon offerings. Nothing too impressive though.
